The Effects of Global Warming

This must be one of the saddest pictures I have seen in a long time and thought Id post it here for you all to see the reality of this situation.

For those who wish to laugh at this poor animal (as that was the tone of the email that I got it in), I would like to share with you the reality of this polar bears sad situation.

Polar bears are soon to become extinct because their ice is melting faster than they can find land to get back onto. Here this Polar Bear is scramming for any form of land to float on. They can not swim far and are drowning in massive numbers because they can not find land to climb onto any more - because all their ice is melting and they have no idea how to escape the situation and why it is happening - because its is not what their animal instinct is used to.

Read this article that I wrote with regards to our Climate Crisis to help you understand exactly what is happening to the icecaps.

Democratic Alliance Take Animal Welfare seriously

This is a letter Helen Zille posted on her Facebook profile yesterday in response to

Lady - the malnourished dog and her puppies, owned by Councellor Caroline Wood

I think its great that Helen Zille took such a strong stance on this matter, and not do what I believe most other political parties would probably have done - paid the media to withdraw the statements and let this subject just vanish into thin air. - Ed.

We take animal welfare seriously

Thursday 25 June 2009 at 4:47pm

"I have received an unprecedented flow of correspondence about Lady, the maltreated dog belonging to the husband of DA councillor Caroline Wood. My office has sought to respond to every letter received. In the circumstances, I would like to repeat publicly the essence of the correspondence we have been sending to individual members of the public who have written to us about the deplorable circumstances surrounding this matter.

The DA takes animal welfare extremely seriously. From the outset we condemned the neglect and abuse of Lady and her puppies. We not only publicly censured Councillor Wood, but also charged her with misconduct in terms of the DA’s Federal Constitution within a week after the incident came to the attention of the DA’s leadership. The party has constituted a disciplinary panel to investigate the matter and to recommend disciplinary action against Councillor Wood. In addition, she will face criminal charges under the applicable animal cruelty legislation.

We fully understand the public outpouring of anger caused by the condition in which Lady and her puppies were found. Lady successfully underwent surgery for an infection in her uterus, and both she and the puppies are now being fed and nursed back to good health by the Animal Welfare Society. The DA has been in regular contact with the Society’s chairman, June Goodman, to find out about their progress. Already the Society has been inundated with offers by concerned citizens to provide a home for Lady.

The DA has offered its assistance with volunteer work at the Animal Welfare Society, and has also undertaken to place volunteers in other organisations as a mark of solidarity for Lady’s plight. The DA would like to thank the Animal Welfare Society for the care and consideration they have shown Lady and her puppies. The Society performs an invaluable service, often with little recognition.

As distressing as the incident with Lady and her puppies has been, hopefully it will serve to raise awareness about abused animals – not all of whom are fortunate enough to arouse the public concern that Lady has."

Remove the Nets: Join the Shark Angels' Campaign against Shark Nets

shark in netIt is difficult to believe in this day in age, with all that we know about sharks' plummeting populations, their critical role in ocean ecosystems, and the minimal risk they pose to humans, that the archaic and destructive practice of installing shark nets for "bather protection" still exists. But in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), South Africa, a province ironically known around the world as one of the few places left where sharks and the ecosystems they keep healthy still thrive, untold numbers of harmless sharks, turtles, dolphins, and rays meet an untimely and senseless death each year by entanglement in the approximately 28 km of nets that are installed just off the beaches.

What are shark nets? Shark nets are essentially gill nets: long rectangular nylon mesh nets, 200-300 meters in length, that are positioned near the surface of the water and kept afloat with buoys. Sharks swim into these nets and are caught by their gills. The squares of mesh are designed to be just large enough for sharks to become entangled, but not escape. The more a shark or any other animal struggles in these nets, the more hopeless their situation becomes, and the more impossible their chances of escape and survival. The vast majority of these animals die an agonizing death by suffocation. Gill nets are widely considered to be one of the greatest threats to the survival of many species of marine animals.

In South Africa, the shark nets are installed in tiered patterns by the KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board (KZNSB). Just beneath the surface, they do not fully extend to either the top or the bottom and do not even come close to fully enclosing the beach areas. The result is that sharks can easily swim around or under the nets and into the shallow waters in which humans swim and surf. In fact, the KZNSB acknowledges on its own website that at least 33% of the sharks killed in these nets were actually on their way OUT from the beaches, rather than on their way in, and other sources estimate that this number is closer to 70%.

You see, the goal is not to provide a physical barrier to keep sharks away from the beaches, but rather to control shark populations by culling them. In many cases, the KZNSB places baited drumlines just outside the shark nets, which are designed to attract sharks in towards the beaches and kill them, either by biting the baited hooks on the drumlines or by entanglement in the nearby gill nets.

The process is entirely unselective, with nets installed all along the coast, including in Marine Protected Areas! The sole purpose of these nets is to kill all sharks in the area, including highly endangered species that would otherwise enjoy stringent legal protection, such as whale sharks and the great white shark. According to the KZNSB's own website, "The Marine Living Resources Act (Act 18 of 1998) controls the exploitation of marine plants and animals in South African waters. . . . The great white shark is totally protected; in 1991 South Africa being the first country in the world to do so." And yet, the KZNSB, which is governed by the KZN Department of Arts, Culture and Tourism, is exempted from these important conservation regulations in the interest of making tourists feel safe.

Sea Shepherd's Director of Shark Conservation, Kim McCoy, a founding member of the Shark Angels alliance, was outraged to witness first-hand the carnage caused by South African shark nets. "Sharks and other animals don't stand a chance against these nets," said McCoy. "They are brutal, indiscriminate killers designed to systematically cull a species for no other reason than to boost tourism by giving beachgoers a false sense of security against a severely sensationalized threat."

Shark Angels co-founder, Julie Andersen, who frequently leads groups of people on diving trips with the tiger sharks of Aliwal Shoal, clearly illustrates the irony of using shark nets to increase tourism, noting the number of tourists who come to South Africa each year specifically to dive with sharks. "Sharks in South Africa contribute a significant amount of revenue to the South African economy and provide countless jobs," said Andersen. "Live sharks mean tourists, jobs, and money. And that is recurring income-not the one-time income generated when a shark is killed."

sea turtleOver the last three decades, more than 33,000 sharks have been killed in the KZNSB shark nets. And if that's not alarming enough, consider the 2,000+ turtles, 8,000+ rays, and 2,000+ dolphins who were also ensnared and killed.

In addition to the countless deaths of sharks and other species caused directly by the shark nets, their impact on our collective psyches is damaging to shark conservation efforts worldwide. The very existence of shark nets perpetuates the myth that sharks are bloodthirsty man-eaters, and that humans require some form of protection from them. The installation of shark nets reinforces our misguided and often irrational fears of sharks by legitimizing these concerns as valid. This in turn fuels the biggest issue faced in shark conservation: the public's apathy, or even loathing, towards sharks.

It could be said there was once a time and a place for shark nets. Perhaps decades ago, when the public knew little about sharks, the fear of shark attacks was running high, and shark populations were far healthier than they are today. The practice of installing shark nets in South Africa began in 1952, when little was known about sharks, and humans had yet to spend the next 50+ years ravaging our oceans, causing irreparable damage and the collapse of species after species. The public wanted "protection" from sharks, and shark nets served this purpose.

But since then, shark fishing has skyrocketed, eliminating a large percentage of the world's shark populations, and the public has been exposed to much information about the importance of biodiversity conservation and the true nature of shark behavior towards humans. In recent years, it has been proven that a variety of non-lethal shark deterrents, such as the Shark Spotters program funded by private donations and the City of Cape Town, can be equally effective, and that animals need not be killed to allow for peaceful coexistence in their domain. The need for shark conservation is now a well-established fact, as is the fact these animals are significantly misunderstood, with the actual risk of an unpleasant shark encounter infinitesimal.

Shark nets are an unnecessary and outdated practice designed to address an issue that could easily be tackled in a non-lethal way, and they blemish South Africa's image as a world leader in conservation. It is time for a change. It is time to get these shark nets out of the water, once and for all.

Father's Day Special: Best Animal Dads

June 18, 2009--Father's Day, which falls this year on Sunday, June 21, annually honors committed human dads. Here National Geographic shared with us some commitment from the dads in the animal kingdom.

The Emperor Penguin

Made famous by the movie March of the Penguins, emperor penguin fathers endure below-freezing temperatures and forgo food to incubate their eggs.

After the female lays a single egg, her mate rests it on his feet and covers it with a flap of skin (above, a penguin protects its chick using the same skin flap).

"You could think of that pouch as almost a male womb, except they're birds," the University of Reading's Pagel said. "They're very much like seahorses in that respect: [They've] taken over a role rightly or wrongly we traditionally associate with females."

For four months the males huddle together, not moving much, while the females fill up on seafood in the ocean. The females eventually return to help feed the newly hatched chicks.

Both Pagel and Forbes say that animal parents give us insight into how human families work. "We can see ourselves in other animals," Pagel said.

The Giant Waterbug

Talk about back-breaking work—the male giant water bug (pictured above in California) literally totes around his brood of about 150 eggs until they hatch.

After a courtship of sparring and grasping, these ferocious insects mate, and the females cement their fertilized eggs to the males' backs with a natural glue.

Over the next three weeks, the male becomes a "very effective dad," said Scott Forbes, a University of Winnipeg biologist and author of A Natural History of Families. The daddy water bug fiercely protects his eggs and periodically exposes them to air to prevent them from growing mold.

The Greater Rhea

For most birds, females are stuck with child care, but not so for the South America's greater rhea (above, chicks nestle into their dad's back feathers at Washington D.C.'s National Zoo).

Females mate with several males during the breeding season, and several birds will lay their eggs in a nest created by a male. The male then incubates up to 50 eggs for six weeks and cares for the newly hatched young. The dads aggressively guard the babies, charging at any animal—even a female rhea—that approaches.

The male rhea at the National Zoo, a second-time father, keeps his chicks from meandering too far away with a rapid clacking of his bill, according to zoo officials.

Because the females put such a "heavy investment"—energy and resources—into producing large eggs, it makes sense for males to pick up the responsibility of caring for the offspring, Forbes said.

Cockroaches

Cockroaches may get a lot of bad press, but you can't call them deadbeat dads.

In species that feed on wood, the parents use the material to build nests and find food for their larvae. Such parental care is "pretty unusual" in insects, Forbes said.

Cockroach fathers will even eat bird droppings to obtain nitrogen, a necessary part of their diet, and carry it back to their young (above, German cockroach babies emerge from an egg).

Wood-feeding cockroaches are also tidy parents, sweeping nurseries clean of dead cockroaches and fungus to shield their families from infection.

The Barking Frog

The barking frog named for its throaty, dog-like call guards his brood after the female lays her eggs under rocks or logs in the U.S. Southwest.

The frog hangs out by the eggs for several weeks, wetting the eggs with his urine if they dry out.

In other frog species, males carry their larvae wrapped around their legs or swallow their newly hatched tadpoles to shelter them in special mouth sacs, Forbes added, giving the offspring a safe haven in which to develop.

The Seahorse

But seahorse fathers (above, a newborn hitches a ride on dad's tail) might just blow those proud papas out of the water.

Seahorses are a type of fish in which the males actually get "pregnant." The female seahorse deposits her eggs in the male's specialized pouch, and the male carries up to 2,000 babies during its 10- to 25-day pregnancy.

"They're fascinatingmales have more or less become females, [almost] transgendered," said Mark Pagel, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Reading in the U.K. "They're devoted fathers."

In general throughout the animal kingdom, males leave parenting to the females, because males have more chances to reproduce and so can create many more offspring, Pagel said.

Pagel calls this a "cruel bind [that] often favors men"--as soon as the female gets pregnant, the male just runs off.

U.S. comedian Chris Rock has said that "a man is only as faithful as his options," he noted, and "that's exactly what happens with animals."

But there are exceptions, and "what's wonderful," he said, "is that the range goes all the way from males that simply provide sperm that are never seen or heard from again through to seahorses, where females just provide eggs and are never seen or heard from again."

The Marmosets

Male marmosets in South America not only carry, feed, and groom their twin babies (pictured, a baby black-tailed marmoset with its mother in a Tokyo zoo), they may even act as "midwives" during birth, grooming and licking the newborns.

Marmoset dads may be so involved because of the high cost of birth for the mother, whose unborn babies eventually make up 25 percent of her body weight—equal to a 120-pound (55-kilogram) woman giving birth to a 30-pound (14-kilogram) infant.

Though nature's default is female-only care, animal fathers such as marmosets will often pitch in when "kids are expensive," for instance, when raising offspring requires two full-time parents that are mated for life, the University of Winnipeg's Forbes said.

Climate Crisis: 3 years to go and the ice will be gone.

I do not think the WORLD understands the effect of the melted ice!

People,
  • READ this article.
  • Watch An Inconvenient Truth (or similar information movies on the climate issues)
  • Do research YOURSELF.

Stop blaming the world for propagating. Open your eyes and take action. We have 3 years of ice left. When the ice has melted, the methane gasses are going to start exploding. Methane which comes in contact with oxygen, explodes. Massive fire balls will start to form all over the earth.

I just don't get it.

AMERICA! YOU are the biggest culprit here. Catch a wake up - Your arrogance has already got the better of you in the world's economic disaster. Do something now, before the earth is going to destroy you.

I have a friend who is studying science, and she once said to me "you know, Juanita, everything WILL balance itself out - no matter what. Illness and disease will reduce the number of people in the world if there are too many - by itself. Climates will form to regenerate back to its original state - the destruction of the world is actually a form of regeneration back to its normal state" and so she went on.

My only consolation is that at least the earth will be able to look after itself. Even if it means another ice age. The greed of the human race has only caused destruction of the earth. I don't wish harm upon people, but I don't see them beating nature at its own game. For sure.

FACT: Humans are the only species in the world that the world does not need. If any other species goes extinct, a massive part of the food chain is messed up. If all the humans go extinct, the earth will thrive!

The effects of Global Warming are very real. We have seen news reports of all extremes lately. The UK had a tornado, the biggest icecap in the North Pole has cracked in half and the stories can go on.

What is Global Warming?

The Ozone Layer is formed to protect the surface heat from escaping to keep us warm and able to survive. The problem is that burning fossil fuels such as coal, gas and oil and the clearing of forests have increased the natural temperatures of our earth.

This in turn has resulted in the major ice caps of the earth started melting more than normal.

What does this mean to us?
  • The ice caps in the Poles are known to reflect most of the harmful UV rays of the sun back out and away from the earth. If the ice caps melt away, the UV rays will have nothing to be reflected out of the earth. The temperatures will increase even more and the chances of us living outside could become zero.

  • The melting ice will raise the sea levels. Say no more.

  • The melting ice will change the ocean temperatures. The flow of the oceans and the temperature of the water together with the air temperature determine the speed of wind. The result is winds and storms of abnormal magnitude. Tornados have already been super destructive as we have seen in the media over the past two years alone.

  • Animals can not migrate to climates of suitable natures, due to them being fenced in by the borders of countries. Polar bears are drowning in big numbers. Their ice is melting and they get lost when swimming in the ocean while looking for a land mass to get back on to. The result is a loss of many animal species.

They said the Arctic Ocean could be ice free by 2050, this date has now been moved forward to 2012! We have to make changes to our daily living routines. And we have to start now.

We have to start with us. Each and every person has to take their own responsibility, and just by reading this article is the first step to take responsibility for their own immediate environment and we have to change our daily habits to help towards this from happening.

Let's stand together as individuals, as businesses and as countires and make a difference!

Here are some tips and ideas on how you can help combat the effects of Global Warming:

  1. Paint your roof white. (Its no joke. we need masses of white to reflect the sun's harmful rays - to replace the melted ice.)
  2. Plant a tree. (and stop buying wooden houses AMERICA!)
  3. Reduce electricity consumption (Unplug all electrical equipment which you normally leave on 'stand by' e.g. your cell phone charger, TV, microwave oven, your laptop, your pc, etc. when not in use.)
  4. Save the trees - we need them to consume our CO2! (Do not print all the ATM slips if you have the option to do so, and recycle paper in the office.)
  5. Use candles for light and hot water bottles for heat.
  6. Recycle everything you can recycle. Educate yourself on items that can be recycled. It starts with you.
  7. Give way to (TAXI's) high occupancy vehicles like busses, taxi's and vehicles with more occupants than your vehicle. Form lift clubs as much as possible. For every taxi or bus you see on the road - it is 10 to 50 cars (around you) less than you would have had if they were not there to service these commuters. So give way and drop your ego's!
  8. Switch off all lights that you do not need, especially at the office.
  9. Use pump action spray rather than aerosol sprays.
  10. Slow down on your demand for meat (the gasses given off by the manure of livestock is also a big problem to polluting the environment).
  11. Drive vehicles that use less fuel and service your vehicles regularly.

Boycott South African Wines Until Whale Butcher Mike Meyers is Sacked

By Captain Paul Watson

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is requesting that the government of South Africa dismiss the Butcher of Kommetjie Beach.

Fifty false killer whales were brutally executed by South Africa’s Marine Coastal Management (MCM) under the orders of Mike Meyers as angry and frustrated rescuers were physically prevented from assisting the whales.

The MCM is a disgrace to the nation of South Africa and Mike Meyers is a disgrace to the human race.

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society has had enough of the ecological stupidity and bureaucratic arrogance of the MCM and we are calling for an international boycott of South African wine until Mike Meyers is removed and the policies of the MCM are changed to reflect genuine concern for the welfare of marine species and threatened ecosystems.

Maybe the influential wine makers of South Africa can apply the pressure to remove this monster before he is allowed to kill again. If not, then our only remedy is to make Meyers into a very costly incompetent bureaucrat for the South African economy.

Time and again Mike Meyers has solved every stranding issue with a lethal solution. This time he arrogantly massacred an entire pod of False Killer whales before hundreds of citizens and before the eyes of the world as reported by television media crews. He was reported strutting about barking orders with a big grin on his face as his men walked along the beach callously and casually dispatching perfectly healthy whales like they were executing helpless prisoners in a mopping-up operation.

Unlike many of his past killings, this time there were hundreds of volunteers on a beach close to Cape Town and despite a call to rescue the whales, despite the ardent desire of the rescuers to save their lives, this mad-dog killer Meyers gave the order to put a bullet into the brain of each of the whales. As the public looked on and children cried, the assault rifles of MCM blew the brains out of one whale after another.

It was a savage, merciless coldblooded massacre directed by a man whose passion for slaughter is equaled only by his incompetence as a civil servant.

This bloodthirsty tyrant ordered rescuers forcibly removed from the beach as the rifles blasted the helpless whales. Before the cameras of the South African media, the compassionate volunteers were dragged and bullied from the scene of horrific carnage and threatened with arrest if they defied his orders to remove themselves.

Meyers simply called himself a scientist and proclaimed the animals doomed, and thus gave the order for execution. This man does not possess a single scientific degree. He is a bureaucrat, not a scientist, not a vet, and not even a former student of marine biology or any discipline involving marine species. In short he is an unqualified sadistic thug and an embarrassment to the government and the people of South Africa.

Later in an interview, he said the decision was made through a consultative process but could not name one scientist that supported the execution of the whales.

This report from someone who was there on the beach and witnessed the MCM thugs executing the whales:

“Take a look at what happened on our beach!! About 55 whales beached and the authorities came and shot them in the afternoon. Hundreds of people were swimming them back in. I swam 6 back, some of mine made it. Mike Meyer from MCM decided to clean up the problem and shot about 40 of them. Absolute bloodbath. In front of a packed beach with volunteers still clinging onto them, or some swimming them away from the police. I can’t sleep, eat, or think. I still feel sick about it all. I know if an animal is dying we need to put him down, but they did not make a big enough effort. At 11 AM the front loaders were already there to dispose of the carcasses. The majority of the animals were still strong and fighting, but they said if we object, that law enforcement would take action.”

We need people to send e-mails to South Africa demanding the resignation of the Butcher of Kommetjie Beach.

Please send off an e-mail to: mmeyer@deat.gov.za

How could you?

HOW COULD YOU? - By Jim Willis, 2001

When I was a puppy, I entertained you with my antics and made you
Laugh. You called me your child, and despite a number of chewed shoes
And a couple of murdered throw pillows, I became your best friend.
Whenever I was "bad," you'd shake your finger at me and ask "How
Could you?" -- but then you'd relent and roll me over for a belly
Rub.

My housebreaking took a little longer than expected, because you were
Terribly busy, but we worked on that together. I remember those
Nights of nuzzling you in bed and listening to your confidences and
Secret dreams, and I believed that life could not be any more
Perfect. We went for long walks and runs in the park, car rides,
Stops for ice cream (I only got the cone because "ice cream is bad
For dogs" you said), and I took long naps in the sun waiting for you
To come home at the end of the day.

Gradually, you began spending more time at work and on your career,
And more time searching for a human mate. I waited for you patiently,
Comforted you through heartbreaks and disappointments, never chided
You about bad decisions, and romped with glee at your homecomings,
And when you fell in love. She, now your wife, is not a "dog person" -
- still I welcomed her into our home, tried to show her affection,
And obeyed her. I was happy because you were happy.

Then the human babies came along and I shared your excitement. I was
Fascinated by their pinkness, how they smelled, and I wanted to
Mother them, too. Only she and you worried that I might hurt them,
And I spent most of my time banished to another room, or to a dog
Crate. Oh, how I wanted to love them, but I became a "prisoner of
Love." As they began to grow, I became their friend. They clung to my
Fur and pulled themselves up on wobbly legs, poked fingers in my
Eyes, investigated my ears, and gave me kisses on my nose. I loved
Everything about them and their touch -- because your touch was now
So infrequent -- and I would've defended them with my life if need
Be. I would sneak into their beds and listen to their worries and
Secret dreams, and together we waited for the sound of your car in
The driveway.

There had been a time, when others asked you if you had a dog, that
You produced a photo of me from your wallet and told them stories
About me. These past few years, you just answered "yes" and changed
The subject. I had gone from being "your dog" to "just a dog ," and
You resented every expenditure on my behalf.
Now, you have a new career opportunity in another city, and you and
They will be moving to an apartment that does not allow pets. You've
Made the right decision for your "family," but there was a time when
I was your only family

I was excited about the car ride until we arrived at the animal
Shelter. It smelled of dogs and cats, of fear, of hopelessness. You
Filled out the paperwork and said "I know you will find a good home
For her." They shrugged and gave you a pained look. They understand >
The realities facing a middle-aged dog, even one with "papers." You
Had to pry your son's fingers loose from my collar as he
Screamed "No, Daddy! Please don't let them take my dog!" And I
Worried for him, and what lessons you had just taught him about
Friendship and loyalty, about love and responsibility, and about
Respect for all life. You gave me a good-bye pat on the head, avoided
My eyes, and politely refused to take my collar and leash with you.
You had a deadline to meet and now I have one, too. After you left,
The two nice ladies said you probably knew about your upcoming move
Months ago and made no attempt to find me another good home. They
Shook their heads and asked "How could you?"

They are as attentive to us here in the shelter as their busy

Schedules allow. They feed us, of course, but I lost my appetite days
Ago. At first, whenever anyone passed my pen, I rushed to the front,
Hoping it was you that you had changed your mind -- that this was all
a bad dream... or I hoped it would at least be someone who cared,
anyone who might save me.

When I realized I could not compete with the frolicking for attention
of happy puppies, oblivious to their own fate, I retreated to a far
corner and waited. I heard her footsteps as she came for me at the
end of the day, and I padded along the aisle after her to a separate
room. A blissfully quiet room. She placed me on the table and rubbed
my ears, and told me not to worry. My heart pounded in anticipation
of what was to come, but there was also a sense of relief. The
prisoner of love had run out of days.

As is my nature, I was more concerned about her. The burden which she
bears weighs heavily on her, and I know that, the same way I knew
your every mood. She gently placed a tourniquet around my foreleg as
a tear ran down her cheek. I licked her hand in the same way I used
to comfort you so many years ago. She expertly slid the hypodermic
needle into my vein. As I felt the sting and the cool liquid coursing
through my body, I lay down sleepily, looked into her kind eyes and
murmured "How could you?"

Perhaps because she understood my dog speak, she said "I'm so sorry."
She hugged me, and hurriedly explained it was her job to make sure I
went to a better place, where I wouldn't be ignored or abused or
abandoned, or have to fend for myself -- a place of love and light so
very different from this earthly place. And with my last bit of
energy, I tried to convey to her with a thump of my tail that my "How
could you?" was not directed at her. It was directed at you, My
Beloved Master, I was thinking of you. I will think of you and wait
for you forever. May everyone in your life continue to show you so
much loyalty.

A Note from the Author:
If "How Could You?" brought tears to your
eyes as you read it, as it did to mine as I wrote it, it is because
it is the composite story of the millions of formerly "owned" pets
who die each year in American & Canadian animal shelters.
Please use this to help educate, on your websites, in newsletters, on
animal shelter and vet office bulletin boards. Tell the public that the
decision to add a pet to the family is an important one for life,
that animals deserve our love and sensible care, that finding another
appropriate home for your animal is your responsibility and any local
humane society or animal welfare league can offer you good advice,
and that all life is precious.
Please do your part to stop the killing, and encourage all spay & neuter
campaigns in order to prevent unwanted animals.
Please pass this on to everyone, not to hurt them or make them sad,
but it could save maybe, even one, unwanted pet.
Remember...They love, UNCONDITIONALLY.

Abused Animal: Chained and malnourished by Caroline Wood

Im shocked but not surprised. I will repeat the following:

"The greatness of a nation
and its moral progress
can be judged
by the way its animals are treated!"

Chained and malnourished. This is the state in which a Greyton animal welfare activist found a dog belonging to the family of a prominent DA councillor.

But councillor Caroline Wood has claimed that her husband Norman Wood owns the female dog. Police have charged him with animal neglect.

Wood said the dog had become emaciated when it refused the food which had been offered to it. (I wonder if her children will also become emaciated if they refuse to eat? I wonder if it would occur to her that there might just be something wrong if her children did not want to eat? What a pathetic excuse.)

Ann Andrews, chairperson of the Greyton Animal Welfare Society, said she had received an anonymous tip-off about the dog and her puppies a week ago. She had then visited the house in Khunel Street, Genadendal, with another worker of the society.

'There was no water for her to drink'

"There was no one at home. At the back of the home we found an emaciated female dog chained to the door frame of a disused outside toilet," Andrews said.

She said the chain, attached to the dog, had been too short for her to reach her three puppies.

"There was no water for her to drink," Andrews said.

"There was a dog's dish with a considerable amount of vegetable peels in it. (nice one! vegetarian dog?)

"The chain was fastened around the dog's neck with wire. (what kind of person uses a WIRE to tie up a live being?) There was no roof on the toilet."

Along with these conditions, Andrews said she and her colleague also found dog faeces covering the entrance to the toilet.

Later in the day the Woods couple was still not at home. Andrews gave a letter to the couple's daughter, informing the family of what she had found on the property.

Andrews also photographed the dog and gave it food to entice it out of the toilet.

On Monday when she returned to the home, Andrews said there had been signs that the dog had been fed since her previous visit, but a nail was being used to shut the toilet in which the dog was kept. (nice one! keep going. you are gaining popularity here lady!)

Wood said she could not make any excuses for the state in which the family's dog was found.

"I'm making no excuses but she (Andrews) has to understand, I'm hardly at home (to see to the condition of the dog) and recently I had been away for eight days in the Eastern Cape." (Let me guess: Treated like a queen, living the high life of a Parliamentarian with our money? )

In a sworn statement, Norman declared only that he was the owner of the dog, but did not go into further detail as to why it had been kept in such a neglected condition. ("Dont worry hunny, I will say the bitch is mine - to help keep you out of the scandal - they will be too stupid to realise we live together and under the same roof." sure dude. Us dummies, we get it. Its all your fault.)
